Chekhov's Ivanov launches the New Year 2019 on the Main Stage

A new production of Ivanov (1887), one of the early plays by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, will open on Saturday, 12 January at 20.00 on the Main Stage, presented in a new translation by Tatjana Stanič. Its main protagonist is one of the most significant characters of world drama, a procrastinator who sets the mirror, due to exacting ethical principles, to himself and the society as a whole. Uroš Fürst in the title role will be joined by an outstanding cast featuring  Polona Juh, Gregor Baković, Igor Samobor, Iva Babić, Mia Skrbinac, Timon Šturbej (a new member of the resident ensemble), Maruša Majer, Rok Vihar, Jurij Zrnec, Saša Pavček, Valter Dragan, Matija Rozman,  Zvone Hribar and Vanja Plut. The production team includes Darja Dominkuš (dramaturg), Meta Hočevar (set designer), Barbara Podlogar (costume designer), Marjan Nečak (composer), Tatjana Stanič (language consultant), Metod Novak (lighting designer), Juš A. Zidar (assistant director), Sara Slivnik (assistant set designer), Lovro Ivančić (assistant costumer designer), and Nastja Miheljak (student assistant set designer).

Ivanov is the harshest critic of himself, analyzing himself ruthlessly, dissecting his thoughts and emotions in order to comprehend what happened to him, and how he has driven himself to the edge of sanity. Nonetheless, he is still capable of resolving radically his position on the edge. As Matjaž Regovec put it in the theatre programme, »a dashing hero is transformed into a pathetic and depressing character unable to escape his frame-up of indolence and everyday paralysis. This is a state that we are all familiar with to a certain degree, and that is feared by all. Ivanov is an image of a (post)modern man, as lived by each one of us.«
