The first Slovenian production of Stephen Karam’s play The Humans directed by Nina Šorak opens on 7 December on the Small Stage

We continue our season called Intimacy on the Small Stage by presenting the first Slovenian production of The Humans, directed by Nina Šorak. The play by American playwright and screenwriter Stephen Karam won the Tony Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle award for best play in 2016, as well as the Obie award, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

The play is set in a basement tenement apartment in Manhattan’s Chinatown where Brigid Blake has recently moved with her boyfriend Richard. Her parents and grandmother from Pennsylvania, and her sister from Philadelphia have come to visit them to celebrate Thanksgiving together. Gradually we learn about the problems of a troubled lower-middle-class American family, presented in juicy, occasionally sarcastic and tragicomic dialogues. Using documentary-like naturalism the play depicts the way we live now, highlighting the lives of the non-privileged individuals, not the elite, but the average members of society living in precarious circumstances with an uncertain future. The cast of the first Slovenian production of The Humans, translated by Tina Mahkota, features Bojan Emeršič, Silva Čušin, Tina Vrbnjak, Nina Ivanišin, Milena Zupančič and Gorazd Logar. The production team includes Urša Adamič (dramaturg), Dorian Šilec Petek (set designer), Ina Ferlan (costume designer), Tatjana Stanič (language consultant), Mitja Vrhovnik Smrekar (composer), Tanja Zgonc (stage movement coach), Vlado Glavan (lighting designer) and Ana Duša (the song lyrics). The play will open on Friday, 7 December at 20.00. Other dates in December include 8, 10, 14, 27 and 28 at 20.00.
Cordially invited to a pre-show talk with the creative team of The Humans on Thursday, 6 December at 10.30 at the Drama Café.
