Amelia Earhart's poem Courage is the price ... was translated by Tina Mahkota.
Courage is the price that Life exacts for granting peace.
The soul that knows it not, knows no release
From little things:
Knows not the livid loneliness of fear,
Nor mountain heights where bitter joy can hear
The sound of wings.
How to articulate a desire to overcome the impossible, how to verbalize a life in its entirety, fullness and enormity? An entire time that is borne by life, a time filled with shifting the borders of society and crossing the framework of gender stereotypes; a time, magically spent flying – a time that conquers physics?
How can life grant us boon of living, compensate
For full gray ugliness and pregnant hate
Unless we dare
The soul’s dominion?
What one feels in the sky when one flies is a unique act of freedom that tears the individual away from every convention of life on the ground. The end happens only at a landing. The end happens at the Landing that is a conclusion, summing up and a celebration of a lived-up life. What remains is the fact that the Landing can disrupt our determination at any time roughly and rudely. It is a fact we learn to live with until the end our lives. But how is one to live until then?
Each time we make a choice, we pay
With courage to behold resistless day,
And count it fair.
